DMF是一種強效殺蟲劑，用于防止各種消費品在儲存時發霉。但是，該物質有時會引起嚴重的皮膚灼傷。因此，歐盟委員會在2009年3月決定禁止在消費品中使用該化合物。此后，歐盟市場上有超過180次的召回，產品包括家具、玩具、鞋、服裝和帽子。英國高等法院判決家具零售商向數千名使用其含DMF產品的受害者支付2000萬英鎊的賠償，這是英國司法史上最大的消費者集體訴訟2。
